If you own a Samsung French-door refrigerator built between 2014 and 2022, you may have already discovered what we see on roughly half of every Samsung fridge service call in Atlanta: the ice maker compartment ices over and stops dispensing.

This is a known design issue affecting a specific family of Samsung French-door units. Samsung issued multiple service bulletins. The good news: there is a permanent fix — not just a temporary reset.

Which Samsung Models Are Affected

Affected model families include RF22, RF23, RF24, RF25, RF26, RF28, RF34, and RF36 French-door units built between roughly 2014 and 2022. Samsung issued service bulletins SB-2017-026, SB-2018-014, SB-2019-022, and SB-2020-007 covering this issue.

Top-mount and side-by-side Samsung fridges generally do not show this pattern.

Why The Ice Maker Freezes Over

The Samsung French-door design places the ice maker inside the fresh-food (top) compartment in a small dedicated cavity. The cavity is supposed to stay below freezing thanks to a small fan and a duct.

The design issue: the cavity is not perfectly sealed, and humid Atlanta air leaks in through gasket gaps. The moisture freezes onto the cavity walls and ice maker mould. Over weeks, the ice buildup blocks the auger and the dispenser stops working.

This is worse in Atlanta than in dry markets. Our 60–75% summer humidity puts more water into the cabinet every door open — we see about 35% more Samsung ice maker freezing complaints than the national service average.

The Quick Reset (Temporary Fix)

You can buy 2–6 weeks of normal ice production with a manual defrost:

  1. Remove the ice bin completely.
  2. Use a hair dryer (low setting) to thaw the cavity walls. Avoid melting any plastic.
  3. Wipe out all moisture with a towel before refitting the bin.
  4. Make sure the ice flap (the door behind the dispenser chute) closes flush. If it doesn’t, the cavity stays humid.

This works for several weeks. It is not a permanent fix — the underlying design issue continues to allow moisture in.

The Permanent Fix — Parts and Process

The durable Atlanta fix is a Samsung-supplied service kit (part numbers vary by model series — we look up the exact part from the model tag) that:

  • Replaces the ice cavity gasket with an updated, taller-profile seal.
  • Replaces the ice flap actuator that fails to close flush after a year or two.
  • Replaces the cavity-mounted ice fan with a higher-output version on certain affected models.

Visit time: 60–90 minutes. Parts cost: $80–$220 depending on model. Labour is flat-rate.

Atlanta Cost and Visit Length

Typical all-in Atlanta cost for the permanent fix: $220–$390. The diagnostic fee is waived when you proceed with the repair. Same-visit completion is normal — we carry the most-common Samsung ice cavity kits on the truck.

If your Samsung fridge is also having a separate ice maker no-production issue, check our Atlanta ice maker repair page — that covers the no-production diagnostic, which is a different fault path.

If a Samsung warranty covers the unit (most cover the ice cavity components for 1–5 years depending on model), use the warranty channel first. Out-of-warranty, our Samsung Atlanta repair line handles the kit installation as a flat-rate job.

Need an LG comparison? See LG repair Atlanta — LG French-doors have their own ice maker pattern (typically a fan-bearing failure) that we cover under that brand page.

FAQs — Samsung Ice Maker

Is this covered under Samsung’s 5-year warranty?
Some affected models are. Check your model number against Samsung’s service-bulletin list before paying out-of-pocket.
Will manually defrosting damage the fridge?
Not if you use a low-heat hair dryer and avoid the plastic surfaces. High-heat or open flames are unsafe.
How often does the temporary reset hold?
2–6 weeks on average. Atlanta’s summer humidity shortens that — some homeowners need the reset every 10–14 days in July–August.
Can I install the Samsung service kit myself?
Possible if you are comfortable with appliance work. The cavity disassembly is finicky and the gasket has a specific seating orientation. We charge flat-rate so DIY savings are real but small.
Why is this Samsung-specific?
Other brands (LG, Whirlpool, GE) place the ice maker inside the freezer (always below freezing, no humidity issue). Samsung is one of the few brands placing it in the fresh-food compartment.
